I must confess that War of the Spark really killed a lot of my interest in Magic. Then Modern Horizons printed a bunch of toxic cards into my favorite format. So instead of trying to fight bullshit with bullshit, I played a bunch of chess games. Then I got sick of plateauing and came back to Magic. Now I’m definitely back and I have a ton of plans. Please keep in mind that it is my busy season at my main job, so a lot of these are going to take time to fully roll out.
-Potentially going to GP Austin and intend to test when I can but also put in a bunch of hours at my second job to cover the hotel, side events, MTGO rentals, and additional spending money there. Event is January 10-12.
-IF I GET VACATION APPROVED FOR AUSTIN: a bunch of Modern playtesting videos, chronicling my deck selection for Austin. Focus is going to be on improvement and handling self-criticism. Would record a vlog at the end of each week discussing what I’ve learned and what I would change for the next week, still mostly focused on a larger level than just the cards. (Remember, I’m a big fan of the idea that cards are interchangeable.). Would likely be recorded late at night and in a dark room for aesthetic purposes; current working title is “Prison Realm”.
-Nerd Rage Gaming announced their 2020 series structure and I’m going to be able to play in some of their events for once! I will hopefully be in Austin for January and I’m not going to drive to Indy in February for only a single 5k, but the Sunday events March and April should be in the cards for me. Ideally, I will have a Prison Realm series for each event. (Admittedly, I don’t really feel confident preparing for Legacy so I sure hope I can go to Austin instead of staying home and playing a Legacy 5k.).
-A new periodic series where I discuss someone else’s written thoughts about Magic and expand on things where I deem necessary. I would strongly prefer to highlight writers who do not necessarily have a large platform, so I would appreciate if my readers find and submit quality articles from other sites to me so I can help boost their work. Working title for this series is “Timely Reinforcements”.
-Theory piece about parity in board states and the flaws in our current ways of approaching parity. This would be modeled after Gerry Thompson’s False Tempo Archetype article… but I just searched for it and for some reason it is not currently on Starcitygames after the website redesign. So not sure what I’ll do here.
-I owe Emma Handy a post from over a year ago, relating to this tweet. As such, I would like to actually write about it.
-I want to set up a page that can be devoted strictly to linking to theory articles across the web. This may take a while because trying to remember some of them is difficult. I’ll also link my own theory content in its own section.
-A website Discord: for readers to discuss my work, suggest articles, and chat with each other. As a lot of my work tends to be conversational or about starting a conversation, I want to open some channels here. A Patreon might also make sense but… well, let’s not look that far yet.
-Long-form, heavily sourced article about Green. Due to the sheer amount of time I want to put into this article, I don’t think it will be possible for it to be released before April. It is the type of piece that I would want to see people citing years down the road. Will expand on everything I touched on here and more.
